You can wash a house any time it's above freezing, but some times of year work better than others here in west-central Illinois.
Spring (April–June): the most popular time
Winter leaves behind road grime, salt spray and a fresh layer of green on north walls. A spring wash gets the house looking good for the whole season. It's also the right time to clean a deck you plan to stain, since you'll have the summer to let it dry and protect it. Spring calendars fill quickly, so book early.
Summer: good for decks and staining
Warm, dry stretches are what stain needs. Summer is ideal for deck restoration followed by staining.
Fall (September–early November): underrated
A fall wash removes the summer's growth before it sits on your siding all winter, and the house looks good for the holidays. Leaves are mostly down, scheduling is easier, and cooler temperatures help cleaning solutions dwell without drying too fast. Before the gutters fill with leaves is also a good time to clean the gutter faces.
Winter
Washing below freezing risks ice on walks and water freezing in cracks. Most exterior washing pauses from about late November to March, which makes it a good time to get on the spring list.
How often?
- House: every 1–2 years
- Roof: when streaks appear, often every few years
- Deck: clean yearly, re-stain every few years
- Driveway: every 1–2 years, or before selling
